History of Ghairavi Sharif

Maulana Muhammad Khurshed Alam Al-Qadari

‘In Urdu, eleven is called ‘Giyarah’. And ‘Ekadash’ is called ‘Giyarvi’. Therefore, the worship of the eleventh day of the month is called ‘Giyarvi Sharif.’ Hakimul Ummut Mufti Ahmad Yar Khan Naimi (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) has briefly written the basis and history of Giyarvi Sharif in the context of the repentance of Hazrat Adam (PBUH) in his book of Tafsir ‘Ashrafut Tafsir’, Surah Baqarah verse 27, p. 297. There he has described the history of the famous Anbiyyah Keram (PBUH) observing Giyarvi Sharif. It is mentioned below-

1. Observance of Ghayarvi Shareef by Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him)
After coming to earth from heaven, the first father and mother of all mankind, Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him) and Hazrat Hawa (peace be upon him), wept and repented for 360 years in regret for forgetting the prohibition of Allah. Their first act was repentance and repentance. Therefore, the repentance and tears of a servant are very dear to Allah. After 360 years, the mercy of Allah Almighty was revealed. Allah Almighty secretly poured some words of repentance into the heart of Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him). Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him) prayed for those prayers. He sought forgiveness through the medium of the name written on the Throne of Allah Almighty, Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Allah Ta’ala was pleased with this and accepted the repentance of Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him) and Hazrat Hawa (peace be upon him). The day when Allah Ta’ala accepted their prayers and repentance was the 10th of Muharram, Friday. After being saved from this great calamity, Hazrat Adam (peace be upon him) and Hawa (peace be upon him) performed a special worship on that night, the night before the 10th, in gratitude for the acceptance of their repentance and their deliverance from the calamity. Their final destination was in that special worship.
2. Hazrat Nuh (peace be upon him) was floating in the ark with 72 companions for six months from the 10th of Rajab to the 10th of Muharram during the great flood. The trees, the mountains, and the hills were all under water. Then, by the infinite mercy of Allah, after 6 months, Hazrat Nuh (peace be upon him)’s boat landed on the top of Mount Judi. When the water receded, he came down to earth. The day when Nuh (peace be upon him) disembarked from the boat was the 10th of Muharram, i.e. Ashura. He worshipped Allah Almighty on the night of the 10th with everyone on the occasion of this great deliverance from this great calamity. This was Hazrat Nuh’s (peace be upon him) Ghairavi Sharif.
3. Unable to stop Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) from preaching Islam in any way and defeated in all arguments, finally the tyrant King Nimrod threw Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) into the fire pit. He was kept in the fire pit for forty days. By the infinite mercy of Allah, the fire stopped and the fire pit turned into a flower garden. The day when Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him) came out of the fire after forty days was also the 10th of Muharram, Ashura. He expressed his gratitude for this great deliverance through special worship on the night of the 10th. And this was the last night of Hazrat Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
4. Hazrat Yaqub (peace be upon him) wept for forty years after losing his beloved son Hazrat Yusuf (peace be upon him). After many incidents narrated in Surah Yusuf, Chapter 12 of the Holy Quran, he finally got his lost son back and his blind eyes were restored by the blessings of Hazrat Yusuf (peace be upon him). The day of this long and difficult deliverance was also the day of Ashura. Hazrat Yaqub (peace be upon him) offered special prayers that night, thanking Allah Ta’ala. This was Hazrat Yaqub’s Ghairavi Sharif.
5. Hazrat Ayub (peace be upon him) suffered from leprosy for 18 years as a test from Allah Ta’ala. The worms had eaten all the flesh from his body, leaving only his bones. Finally, Hazrat Ayub (peace be upon him) prayed to Allah Ta’ala through the medium of our merciful Prophet (peace be upon him), and Allah Ta’ala accepted his prayers and cured him of the disease. The day of his cure was also the 10th of Muharram, i.e. Ashura. He spent the night of the 10th in prayer as a sign of gratitude for his cure and passing the test of faith. This was Hazrat Ayub’s Ghairavi Sharif.
6. The Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, caused much trouble to Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) and the Children of Israel. When the disobedience to the Prophet of Allah exceeded the limit and the period of his divine claim expired, then, at the command of Allah, Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) left Egypt with 1.2 million Children of Israel including children. In front of him was the Red Sea. At the command of Allah Almighty, at the blow of Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him)’s staff, the waters of the Red Sea split into two, standing like walls on both sides like mountains, and 12 dry roads became visible. 100,000 people crossed at a very fast speed through each road and entered the Asian continent on the other side of the river. Pharaoh tried to destroy them, and drowned his army along with the mountains on both sides. The day of this great liberation of Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) and his companions was also the day of Ashura. He and his companions were engaged in worshipping Allah Almighty on the night of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram. This was the night of Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him).

When he went to invite the people of his community to the Word of God on the orders of Allah, they tortured and tortured Hazrat Yunus (peace be upon him) and caused great suffering. When Hazrat Yunus (peace be upon him) decided to leave the country in anger, he fell into the river on the way. He boarded a boat on the river to cross over. In the middle of the way, he jumped into the river and as a test of Allah’s power, Hazrat Yunus (peace be upon him) entered the belly of the fish. The day he was released from the belly of the fish was also the 10th of Muharram, i.e. the 10th of Muharram. Therefore, despite his physical weakness, he was engaged in special worship by thanking Allah the Almighty on the day and night of that 10th. This was the Ghairavi Sharif of Hazrat Yunus (peace be upon him).
8. Hazrat Dawud (peace be upon him) repented at the suggestion of Allah Ta’ala for his 100th marriage and prostrated himself before Allah. Allah Ta’ala accepted his repentance and was pleased. After forty days, he recovered his lost ring hidden by the jinn, recovered his kingdom and throne and punished the jinn. Fortunately, the day Hazrat Sulayman (peace be upon him) got his lost blessing back was the 10th of Muharram. He worshipped Allah Almighty that night as a sign of gratitude for this blessing. This was the Ghairavi Sharif of Hazrat Sulayman (peace be upon him).

But Allah Almighty took Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) to the fourth heaven through the angel Gabriel and changed the shape of that spy to resemble the shape of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him). Finally, the enemy of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him) was captured and impaled. The day of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him)’s ascension to heaven was also the day of Ashura. He was saved from that great danger and thanked Allah the Almighty in the sky that night through worship. This was the last night of Hazrat Isa (peace be upon him).

Aqaba and the Master of Tajdar in Medina, the Intercessor of Intercession, the Guardian of the Ummah Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa (peace be upon him) set out for Mecca in the sixth year of the Hijri with fourteen hundred companions to perform Umrah. But when he reached a place called Hudaybiya near Mecca, he was stopped by the Quraysh of Mecca. After 19 days, he finally made an agreement and returned to Medina without performing Umrah that year. The Companions considered it a disgrace and were deeply saddened, but they accepted the instructions of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). On the way to Medina, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pitched his tent for rest. The first few verses of Surah Al-Fatah were revealed there. Comforting the heartbroken Companions, Allah addressed His beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! I have granted the Treaty of Hudaybiyah as a great victory because of you. Through you, I have forgiven the sins of all those before and after you.” The day on which this verse containing good news was revealed was the 10th of Muharram. Hearing the good news of a great victory and forgiveness of sins, the Companions understood the true secret of the Treaty of Hudaybiyah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions spent the night of the 10th in thanksgiving to Allah and worship. This was the Ghayarvi Sharif of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions (may Allah be pleased with him). Dear reader, here is the evidence and history of the Ghayarvi Sharif of a total of 11 famous Prophets and Messengers (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Thus, one hundred and twenty-four thousand, or in other words, two hundred and twenty-four thousand Prophets have all observed Ghayarvi Sharif, which is proven in the Quran, Hadith and various books of interpretation. Here I have presented the evidence of 11 people. Since the topic is Ghayarvi Sharif. Therefore, the meaning of Ghayarvi Sharif is that on the 11th night of every lunar month, some Prophet or the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was tested by the Almighty Allah. Having passed, they have become beloved by performing special acts of worship as a form of gratitude, namely, prayers, glorification, tahlil, remembrance-remembrance, the words of Allah, and recitation, and have received mercy, grace, compassion, forgiveness, etc. from Allah the Almighty. Therefore, since the Prophets and Messengers are honored, and the Arabic months, i.e. the lunar months given by Allah the Almighty, are honored, the worship on that date is also called ‘Ghayarvi Sharif’ or ‘Eleventh Sharif’. And with this eleventh Sharif in mind, the evidence and history of the eleven Prophets and Messengers, may Allah bless them and grant them peace, are presented below:

Pirane Pir Dastgir Mahbube Subhani Ghausul Azam Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jilani Al-Hasani Wal Hussaini Rahmatullahi Alaihi received this Ghairavi Sharif of the prophets of the book –
‘Ghairavi Sharif’ is basically a special Khatam and Du’a. Following the example of Hazrat Baro Pir Ghausul Azam Abdul Qadir Jilani Rahmatullahi Alaihi, on the night or day of the 11th of every lunar month, the scholars and Pir Mashaikhs of Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal-Jamaat observe the said Ghairavi Sharif with a special Khatam for the sake of the Holy Spirit of God. It is narrated in the book ‘Milad-e-Shaykh-e-Barhak’ about how Hazrat Gauche Pak Abdul Qadir Jilani (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) received this Ghairavi Sharif – Hazrat Gauche Pak Abdul Qadir Jilani (Rahmatullahi Alaihi) (471-561 AH) used to observe the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) on 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal every year with devotion and respect. One day, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said to Gauche Pak in a dream – In return for the way you have been observing my Milad Sharif on 12 Rabi-ul-Awwal with respect and reverence, I, the Prophet, was pleased and bestowed upon you the ‘Ghairavi Sharif’ of the respected prophets. (Subhanallah!)
Hazrat Gauche Pak Abdul Qadir Jilani Rahmatullahi Alaihi Tariqa and other Tariqas, along with the Shaykhs of Hazrat Gauche Pak, observe this Ghayarvi Sharif on the night or day of the 11th of every lunar month in a special manner, following the teachings of Hazrat Gauche Pak, and this will continue until the Day of Judgment, Insha Allah.

Virtues of Ghayarvi Sharif –
It is found in the book ‘Fazayil-e-Ghawsia’ that a person who regularly observes Ghayarvi Sharif on the 11th of every lunar month will become wealthy and prosperous in a short time and poverty will be eradicated. Whoever denies it will remain in poverty. Wherever or in the area where this Ghayarvi Sharif is observed, the mercy of Allah Pak descends. Because it is stated in the Hadith Sharif – نَتْزِلُ الرَّحْمَةُ عِنْدَ ذِكْرِ الصَِّحِيْنَ i.e., Allah’s mercy descends in the gathering of the remembrance of the righteous. Whoever observes the Ghairavi Sharif will receive goodness and blessings. Whoever observes the Ghairavi Sharif regularly will be protected from dangers and calamities, will be free from sorrow and worries, and will live a life of happiness and peace. May Allah the Almighty grant us the ability to follow the path and views shown by the Awliya-e-Karam through the means of His beloved Habib Sallallahu Ta’ala Alayhi Wasallam and attain their spiritual virtues, thereby achieving closeness to Allah the Almighty and His beloved Habib Sallallahu Ta’ala Alayhi Wasallam. Amen.
